Definitions of Women's Lingerie
Lingerie "Camis" or Camisoles... are sleeveless tops that extend to the waist, usually offering very little support for the breasts. Camis are also very popular as outerwear.
Lingerie Chemise... is like a camisole but longer in length, and sometimes a matching panty is included. Originally, chemises were worn as slips under dresses or as short nightgowns, but now they can also be worn as a sexy sundress or as a top with jeans. Lingerie Bras... are garments that provide various amounts of coverage, structure and support for the breasts. Some bras have adjustable straps for better fit, and some bras have underwires for support and shaping. Many bras are offered with a matching panty. Traditionally worn only as underwear, bras are now trendy when showing under an open or low cut top or dress. Lingerie Panties... come in several styles. The g-string panty is the most daring with just a string in the back of the panty while a thong panty has a narrow strip of fabric in the back. If a style is called simply a "panty", then the panty has narrow straps or panels on the hips and full coverage in the back. For the really daring, some panties are crotchless. Boy shorts... These are tiny lacy shorts that women wear as underwear. Some men find them very sexy. Boy shorts are box shaped while tanga shorts are boy shorts that show more cheek. Lingerie Bustier... is similar to a bra but it has panels extending from the bottom of the bra to the waist or hips, creating a structured supported look. Bustiers often have underwires & removable straps for extra support, and many bustiers have straps at the bottom that attach to stockings or garters. Out on the town, a bustier matched with a skirt or pant can be a very trendy top. Lingerie Babydoll... is a loose bra-like top with attached fabric (usually sheer) that extends from the bottom of the breasts to the waist or below, and are usually sold with a panty-type bottom. Think of it as a really short nightgown that hits at the top of the hip. It usually ties or clasps at the bust, and the rest of the fabric kind of floats away from the body. Lingerie Teddy... resembles a one piece swimsuit and can be worn as sleepwear or as an undergarment. Teddies are usually form fitting and thong backed.
Lingerie Gown... is a long dress or sleepwear item made from light weight fabric and is usually floor or ankle length. Many lingerie gowns come with a matching panty.
Kimonos... These robes commonly are worn over more revealing types of lingerie, to make the woman feel comfortable when, for example, she’s walking around in just a slip. Body stocking... is an article of lingerie, similar to a leotard or a cat suit. It usually has long legs, but it may have long, short, or no sleeves. It is usually made from a sheer fabric similar to those used for stockings and tights, or from fishnet material. Thanks to Wicked Temptations and MOAA for these definitions! |
